Garajau Tour

East of Funchal, where the island's southern coastline curves into a wide natural bay, sits one of Madeira's most rewarding and least crowded destinations. Garajau is a place of vertiginous cliffs, crystalline Atlantic waters, and a landmark that surprises almost every visitor who encounters it — a Cristo Rei statue that preceded its famous counterpart in Rio de Janeiro by several decades and stands watch over one of Portugal's most important marine reserves. The Garajau Tuk-Tuk Tour is a private, expertly guided half-day journey that takes you there — with hotel or cruise terminal pickup included and no fixed group to keep pace with.
Pináculo — Funchal From the Edge
Your tour departs Funchal and climbs eastward through the city's upper neighbourhoods before reaching the Pináculo viewpoint — a clifftop belvedere perched 280 metres above sea level on the eastern ridge above the bay. From here, Funchal spreads below in its full amphitheatrical form — the city descending from the mountains to the seafront in tiers of terracotta rooftops, the harbour and marina visible to the west, and the bay curving eastward toward Garajau and the open Atlantic beyond. It is one of the most complete and least visited panoramic perspectives on the island, and the ideal way to read the geography of everything that follows.
Garajau — A Landmark Older Than Its Famous Twin
The Cristo Rei de Garajau stands at the clifftop above the bay, arms extended over the Atlantic in the now-familiar pose — but this statue was erected in 1927, a full 4 years before the more celebrated Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro was completed. It is one of those historical details that reframes a familiar image entirely. The Garajau statue was commissioned as a devotional monument by the people of Madeira, and its clifftop position above the reserve gives it a setting that, in its own quieter way, rivals anything the Brazilian version commands.
Directly below the statue, the waters of Garajau Marine Reserve — established in 1986 as one of the first marine protected areas in Portugal — are among the clearest and most biodiverse in the Atlantic. The reserve's protected status has allowed its underwater ecosystem to recover and thrive over decades, making it one of the finest diving and snorkelling locations in Madeira, home to grouper, moray eels, rays, and a remarkable diversity of Atlantic marine life. Even from the clifftop, the depth and clarity of the water below is extraordinary — a different shade of blue from anything visible further along the coast.
Your guide will provide the context, the history, and the details that turn a viewpoint into a genuinely understood place — and there is ample time to explore, photograph, and absorb Garajau at your own pace before the return journey to Funchal.
