Botanical Garden Tour

Madeira is, in geological terms, relatively young. The island rose from the Atlantic as a series of volcanic eruptions less than five million years ago, and its isolation since then has produced something remarkable — an ecosystem found nowhere else on earth. The combination of volcanic rock, Atlantic humidity, and the island's extraordinary range of microclimates, from sea-level subtropical warmth to mist-wrapped mountain peaks, created the conditions for a biodiversity that still surprises botanists.

The ascent to the Botanical Garden is itself part of the tour. The tuk tuk climbs through Funchal's upper hillside neighbourhoods — quieter, more residential streets far from the seafront hotels, where old quintas sit behind stone walls and the bay view expands with every hairpin bend. This is a Funchal that most visitors never reach.

The Jardim Botânico da Madeira occupies what was once the Reid family's private estate at 300 metres above sea level. The family — responsible for the famous Reid's Palace Hotel — established the gardens in 1881, cultivating collections of rare plants from Madeira, the tropics, and beyond. In the 1950s, the property passed to the regional government, which expanded it into the scientific and cultural institution it is today.

The garden covers 80,000 square metres of terraced hillside. The collections span endemic Madeiran flora — including specimens of the ancient Laurissilva laurel forest, which UNESCO recognised as a World Heritage Site in 1999 and which once covered much of the European continent — through to tropical and subtropical plants from five continents. The formally designed ornamental terraces offer some of the finest panoramic views of Funchal bay available anywhere on the island.

Within the garden, the Museum of Natural History documents Madeira's fauna, geology, and endemic species — the birds, insects, and marine life that evolved in isolation over millions of years, cut off from the continental mainland.

The return route descends through Funchal's historic centre. The Sé Cathedral, completed in 1514, is one of the oldest Portuguese Gothic buildings in the Atlantic and retains its original Manueline carved ceiling. Praça do Município — Funchal's civic heart, with its striking black-and-white mosaic pavement — completes the tour before returning you to the marina.
