Garajau Tour

A Cristo Rei That Predates Rio — and Almost Nobody Knows It
Garajau sits just east of Funchal — close enough to reach in minutes, far enough from the tourist circuit that almost nobody goes there. The village perches on vertiginous cliffs above crystalline Atlantic waters and receives a fraction of the visitors that crowd the island's better-known destinations. That, in itself, is part of what makes it worth the journey.
At the tip of the headland stands the Cristo Rei de Garajau — a Christ statue erected in 1927, four years before the more celebrated Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro was completed. The Garajau statue was commissioned as a devotional monument by the people of Madeira, raised on the clifftop above the ocean, arms outstretched toward the Atlantic. Most visitors to Madeira never see it. Most visitors to the world have never heard of it. Yet it predates the icon that defines a continent's skyline.
Before reaching Garajau, the tour stops at the Pináculo viewpoint — 280 metres above sea level on the eastern ridge above Funchal. From here the city reveals itself in its full amphitheatrical form: terracotta rooftops descending in tiers toward the seafront, the bay curving eastward into the distance, the mountains rising behind. There is no viewpoint in Funchal that gives you the whole picture so clearly.
Below the Cristo Rei, the waters of Garajau are protected as one of Portugal's first marine reserves — established in 1986 as a sanctuary for the extraordinary biodiversity of the Atlantic shelf. Grouper, moray eels, rays, and species found nowhere else in this density patrol waters so clear you can read their character from the clifftop. The reserve's existence is why the water below retains the colour it does.
A guide makes all the difference at a place like this. Without context, a clifftop statue and a protected cove are pleasant enough. With it — the history of the monument, the story of the reserve, the geological forces that shaped these cliffs — a viewpoint becomes a genuinely understood place. That is what this tour is designed to give you.
A blanket is provided on cooler days. Pickup and drop-off included. The tour is private — just your group.
What guests say about Tukxi Madeira
João Silva was an amazing guide! We loved our tour of old town so much that we booked a second afternoon tour with him to go into the mountains. He was so knowledgeable, approachable, and accommodating for our family, making sure we saw the best views, got all the local history, and tried local drinks. Highly recommend! Thank you, João!!

Frequently asked questions
No — both the Pináculo viewpoint and the Cristo Rei de Garajau are free to visit. The marine reserve is visible from the clifftop without any charge. If you'd like to dive or snorkel in the reserve, that requires a separate booking with a local dive operator — your guide can recommend one.
The price (from €100) is per tuk tuk, not per person. The tuk tuk accommodates up to 4 passengers for this tour. Whether you're a couple or a group of four, the price is the same.
Most visitors to Madeira follow the same well-known route — Funchal, Cabo Girão, Monte. Garajau sits just east of Funchal but rarely appears on standard itineraries. That's exactly what makes it special — the Cristo Rei, the marine reserve, the Pináculo panorama, all with almost no tourist crowds. Our guests consistently say it's the discovery they didn't expect.
Yes — at 2 hours, the Garajau Tour pairs well with the Funchal City Tour or Câmara de Lobos Tour for a full morning or afternoon of exploring. Alternatively, you can upgrade to the Madeira Grand Experience, which can incorporate Garajau and Pináculo alongside other island highlights in a longer private tour.
